Whether you're a beginner or have been doing your own mehendi for years, getting a deep, dark stain from a mehendi cone always comes down to technique. This complete guide walks you through every step — from choosing the right cone to aftercare — to help you achieve bridal-quality results at home.
Wash the area thoroughly with soap and warm water. Dry completely — there should be no moisturiser, lotion, or oil on the skin initially. Then apply a thin layer of eucalyptus oil. This opens your pores slightly and helps the lawsone (henna pigment) penetrate more deeply into the skin, resulting in a darker stain.
Use a sharp pair of scissors or a pin to pierce the very tip of the cone at a 45° angle. The smaller the hole, the finer the line. For beginners practising basic designs, a slightly larger hole is forgiving. For bridal fine-work, keep the hole as small as possible — about 0.5mm.
Hold the cone like a pen and apply consistent, gentle pressure. Start from the centre of your design outward. The key is to keep the cone moving at a steady pace — stopping will cause blobs, moving too fast will break the line. Rest your hand on the surface for stability.
Once the design is complete and the surface has dried slightly (20–30 minutes), dab a mixture of 1 teaspoon lemon juice + 1 teaspoon sugar onto the paste using cotton wool. Repeat every 45–60 minutes to keep the paste moist and sticky. This dramatically improves the final stain.
This is the most important step. The longer the paste stays on, the darker the stain. For everyday use, 4 hours is a good minimum. For bridal or festival use, leave the paste on overnight for the deepest possible colour. Keep the area warm and dry throughout.
Gently scrape the dried paste off with a blunt butter knife or your fingers — do NOT wash with water. Apply a generous amount of clove oil or coconut oil to the design and rub gently. Avoid water contact for 12–24 hours. The stain will continue to darken over 24–48 hours.
